PANEL

The Ties That Bind: Creatorship and Ownership at the Intersection of Art, Web3 and Law

“We never look at just one thing; we are always looking at the relation between things and ourselves.”

― John Berger, Ways of Seeing

Many digital artists do not set out seeing their creations as a bundle of legal rights and obligations. Many collectors of digital art see their collections as assets that have both aesthetic and financial value. Many lawyers wrestle with issues of who has created what and who owns what when there are disputes of creatorship and ownership over works of art. The creation and ownership of Web3 art is a new frontier for everyone and the limits and lacunas of intellectual property law are the ties that bind these relationships. This interdisciplinary panel discussion explores the ways in which Web3 technologies like blockchain, augmented reality, and generative AI are challenging what it means to create and own works of digital art. It's a lot to cover in just an hour. So, this isn't the whole conversation. It is an invitation for you to be part of a good start as we make, collect and protect art in and for a Web3 world.
